The JMQ is getting their dixieland and early 30's swing on as they anchor the pit for "Good News," the musical put on by Portage Central High School, held at Portage Northern High School (you figure it out). Running the first three weekends in February; don't miss it! The JMQ is featured on the Mighty Bright myspace page, under the Mighty Bright on Stage album. Check it out! |
Music Directors have the daunting task of hiring musicians from the local area for shows. Oftentimes they pick musicians they've worked with before. Other musicians are also brought in from word of mouth recommendations. In a college town this poses a challenge, as the available musicians can change wildly year to year, leaving the Music Director to hire someone they know - and have heard - nothing about.
Once hired, there are a handful of rehearsals for all of the musicians to learn the music, but more importantly, learn to play with each other. Like the foundation of a building, a solid pit orchestra can make or break a show. The synergy between pit musicians is of critical importance to be able to think as a cohesive unit, follow the director precisely, but also listen and adapt to anything that is happening onstage, masking any hiccups.
There is a better way.
